2024 Grade 8 Regents Summer Reading

The objective of summer reading for students is to assist them in cultivating skills that have been built throughout their academic careers. It is the hope that summer reading will strengthen and reinforce skills that are vital to all aspects of academics and beyond. Students will choose one of the following book options to read this summer and will complete an assessment on the book upon their return to school in September.

  • Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
  • The Crossover (verse edition) by Kwame Alexander
  • As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds
  • We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
  • Ghost by Jason Reynolds
  • The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney
  • Where Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed

  • You will receive the assignment for the book when you return to school in September.
  • It is highly recommended that you take notes as you read the book so that when you are asked to complete the summer reading project, you will be able to quickly and easily refresh your memory.
  • If you purchase the book, feel free to use the annotation skills you gained in 7th grade to assist you.

Suggestions for note-taking:

Take notes on the following literary elements to help guide your annotations and reading:

  • characters & characterization
  • setting
  • plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, & resolution)
  • conflict
  • theme
