Lisa Ruyack, the library media specialist at Pine Bush Elementary, gives all the PBE students the challenge of reading for at least 40 days over the months of July and August. Students in grades kindergarten through 2 must read 20 minutes each day and those in grades 3 through 5 read at least 30 minutes.
There were 54 students who participated this year. Those who did kept track of their reading time on a calendar and presented it to Mrs. Ruyack after school began in September. These dedicated readers received a certificate, special prize, donated book and a magazine, but the true prize, according to Mrs. Ruyack, is becoming a better reader.
“I developed the program years ago because my professional goal has always been to increase reading outside the school day,” said Mrs. Ruyack. “We can control what and how much students read IN school, but what happens at home is where the impact really takes on steam.”
Mrs. Ruyack is hoping that next year will be a summer reading record breaker! Keep up the good work PBE! Read, read, read!
