Andrea Urmston’s fourth grade class recently learned about the dreidel game, one of Hanukkah’s favorite traditions for children.
The class read the book “I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Dreidel” by Caryn Yacowitz to go along with the game.
On each of the dreidel’s four sides is inscribed a Hebrew letter—nun, gimel, he, and shin—which together stand for “A great miracle happened there.” Traditionally, dreidel is played with chocolate coins, or gelt. It’s a fun and delicious way to learn about and celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights!
