Haiku and technology are a perfect match

Sixth-grade students at Circleville Middle School worked with Robin Renahan, the CVMS library media specialist, to bring their Haiku poems to life!

A student with long brown hair sits at a table in the library. A tablet is open on the table and an orange wire is attached to it. She is holding the wire in her left hand and has her right index finger on a drawing on a piece of paper.

Students drew three illustrations that represented their winter Haiku poem. They then coded a winter scene on Scratch, a program they use to create digital stories and animation, and recorded themselves saying each line of their poem in three separate recordings, to go with the animation.

A student with very short brown hair sits at a table in the library. A tablet is open on the table and an orange wire is attached to it. He is holding the wire in one hand and has his finger from the other hand on a drawing on a piece of paper.

They pieced together a Makey-Makey circuit and when the students held the wire of the circuit with one hand and touched the drawings using the opposite finger, the audio reading of the poem was heard!

A students wearing a red hoodie stands at a desk in the library. There are people and books and shelves in the background. Another person is sitting at the table nearby. The student has a wire coming from the tablet and drawings on the table.

A very cool combination of STEAM, reading and writing – all things that are loved by Ms. Renahan!
