Fifth graders at PBE learn about cleaning up an oil spill

Students in Patricia LoPresti’s fifth-grade class at PBE recently saw first-hand how oil spills hurt our environment.

Three elementary students stand around a desk and mix oil and cocoa for an experiment.

After learning about oil spills and their effects, they created their own oil, using vegetable oil and cocoa powder. They poured it on feathers, to represent birds.

Three elementary students - one boy and two girls - sit at a table with a yellow dish that contains oil and feathers.

The students brainstormed different methods for cleaning up the oil and saving the animals in the process.  They tried different methods to see what worked best, including dish soap with cotton balls and a sponge. They determined that dipping the cotton balls in the soap was the best clean-up method for the birds.

Three elementary age girls stand around a desk tha thas a bowl with oil in it. One of the girls, wearing glasses and a blue shirt has her hand in the bowl, putting a feather in it.

A desk with feathers and a yellow bowl that contains oil with cocoa, making it brown. There are three students standing around it working together.

The students were also able to see how badly oil spills can hurt our planet.
