EJR students are wise about fire safety, thanks to our great volunteer fire fighters

It’s Fire Safety Week! Our elementary students have been receiving visits and instruction from our wonderful Pine Bush Fire Department and Circleville Fire Department volunteers all week long. It’s been incredibly informative, and the students are inquisitive and engaged.

Two firefighters wearing navy blue shirts stand in front of a red fire truck that says Pine Bush. There is a class of elementary aged kids listening to them talk.

The theme for this year’s Fire Safety Week is “Fire Won’t Wait, Plan Your Escape.” The students were very impressive in their knowledge of fire safety – having a pre-determined meeting spot out in front of the structure, calling 911, not going back into the building for any possessions or pets, sleeping with their bedroom door closed and what to do if their smoke detector goes off through the night.

At EJR, students had the opportunity to go into a fire engine. They also crawled through a “smoke room” in the department’s simulated smoke house. Volunteers explained that they should stay low since the smoke and hot air rises and use their right hand to feel their way along the wall to the outside. They all did a great job!

The volunteer fire fighters also explained what the different vehicles are used for and what the equipment is on them. It was so informative for the students. They and their teachers thanked our volunteers for their service to the community and for taking the time to provide this vital lesson.
