A special celebration – and learning opportunity – for Clemmy’s sixth birthday

There was a special celebration Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Stacey Venzel and Jessica Fobert’s class at Pine Bush Elementary. It was Clemmy’s birthday! Clemmy is the now six-year-old guinea pig that is beloved by the class!

A girl smiles as she holds a plush carrier with a guinea pig in it. She turns and is reading from papers she created that are being held by her teacher, a woman with long dark hair.

As part of the celebration, the students had creative choice on their project – they could do a research project, art project, write a fiction or non-fiction story about guinea pigs or Clemmy specifically. In science they are learning about human anatomy. For this project they could research the anatomy of a guinea pig.

A fourth-grade girl sits holding a soft carrier that has a guinea pig in it. She is looking at a screen next to her reading facts about guinea pigs.

The students took turns presenting their project to the class, each getting to hold Clemmy as they presented.

Here are some fun guinea pig facts the students reported on. Did you know that guinea pigs:

  • Are vegan
  • Need additional vitamin C
  • Have teeth that always grow (they need to munch on food to shorten them)
  • Do not sweat
  • Take short naps, not long sleeps
  • Can get hiccups
  • Originally come from the Andes region of South America
  • Are born with fur and teeth
  • Started being domesticated around 5000 BC
  • And they are born to be royal – Queen Elizabeth I had a guinea pig!

A fourth-grade girl with long brown hair holds a soft carrier along with a fourth-grade boy with short black hair. In the carrier is a brown, black and white guinea pig. There are hands going into the carrier to pet her.

Although it’s hard to imagine the queen’s guinea pig being treated any better than Clemmy. Everyone loves Clemmy, the birthday girl!
