Twenty-seven PBHS student-athletes will compete in college

The Pine Bush High School Class of 2023 is graduating 27 student-athletes who have committed to playing their respective sport in college.

A group of 25 high school students, all wearing athletic shirts, sit on bleachers in three rows.

On Tuesday, June 6, Michael Gillespie, director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics, gathered these student-athletes, along with their coaches and family members, at the high school to salute them.

A high school young man smiles broadly as he sits at a table signing a paper. Standing next to him are a man with his arm around his shoulder, a woman and a younger boy. All are smiling.

A very small percentage of high school athletes go on to play in college. Mr. Gillespie noted that just 1.7 percent of girls who play softball in high school go on to play college ball for division 2 schools. For field hockey players, that percentage is 1.4. For boys, just 0.8 percent of high school wrestlers move on to play at a D2 school while 2.3 percent of baseball players do.

Students who participate in extra-curricular activities benefit greatly from those activities. They develop leadership skills, gain positive role models, forge strong friendships and, in the case of athletes, improve their health and fitness.

So, here’s a shout out to those who are taking their athletic talents to the next level. Congratulations to all and best of luck in your future athletic and academic endeavors.
