Real life skills! That’s what students are learning in Jennifer Muniz’s Family and Consumer Science class at Crispell Middle School.
This group of sixth-grade students are learning basic sewing skills. They discuss how much thread they’ll need (wide arm’s length, not a T Rex arm’s length) and how much must be left to tie it off when they’re done (about the distance between their thumb and forefinger).
They were patiently threading their needles, knotting the thread and practicing their straight stitch on the pieces of felt. These skills will be put to good use as the students are sewing turtles – cutting out the felt, making their own design to sew on top and stuffing the turtle shell.
