During our district-wide Spirit Week last week, PBE had a special day of its own on Wednesday when they wore green to show support of Kabuki Syndrome Awareness Day.
This cause is important to Pine Bush Elementary staff and students since Ashlyn Cardone, a student in first grade, has Kabuki Syndrome.
Kabuki Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. People with Kabuki may experience the following: mild to moderate intellectual impairment, growth delays, low muscle tone, feeding difficulties, heart defects, skeletal abnormalities, vision and hearing impairments, and/or communication delays and behaviors similar to people with autism.
Students at PBE learned about Kabuki Syndrome and received a card with information about it to bring home. Ashlyn’s classmates learned about what makes her different from them, but also what makes her just like them. She loves her stuffies, playing with Bluey and being with her family. Her medical issues could get her down. Instead, she is brave, fierce, kind and persistent, according to her mom. Her classmates now have a better understanding of her uniqueness.
Ashlyn’s class and her sisters’ classes in both first and fourth grades, celebrated her in a very special way. They and their staff members went out into the courtyard and formed a big A for Ashlyn!
