Crispell students cap off American history unit with Revolutionary War artifacts

Seventh-grade students at Crispell Middle School had an amazing lesson about the Revolutionary War recently, with replica artifacts on display in their library.

Librarian Lisa Ruyack procured the traveling trunk from American Battlefield Trust. The Traveling Trunk program is free of charge to educators and provides reproduction artifacts, clothing, documents, and other various materials for teachers to utilize during their early U.S. history instruction.

Some very interesting items were a spindle with yarn, clothing for both men and women of the time and money. There were letters, George Washington’s rules of civility and rules of conduct, and a list of cash crops.

Students walked around the exhibit, finding items that answered questions on their scavenger hunt. They were excited when they found what they were looking for!

Seventh-grade teachers Christine Humphrey  and Sarah Hipkins said their students just learned about the Revolutionary War, its causes, key battles and colonial America. This exhibit was a great way for them to actually see what it was like during that time period.

At the end of the event, the students do a “three-two-one,” according to Ms. Ruyack. Tell three things they learned, two things that surprised them and one thing they want to learn more about.
