Career day brings 22 professionals to Crispell students

Crispell’s annual career day for eighth-grade students was a big success, with 22 professionals sharing information and hands-on activities with our students.

All eighth-grade students had the opportunity to choose three sessions, each lasting 25 minutes. They listened and asked questions, and even got to do things related to the particular job.

For example, Mason Memmelaar, an engineer, challenged the students in one of his sessions to build a bridge out of paper and tape, connecting two text books. The bridge was to hold coins. Some were very successful, holding many coins.

Dave Hargrove, a caricature artist, was a very popular stop for the morning. He talked to the students about careers in art and drew several amazing caricatures!

Chef Benjamin Randall talked to crowded classes about the restaurant industry. He explained to the kids about life in the kitchen, the different jobs available and the pressures of this very fulfilling career. “You get to make lots of people happy,” he told them, before serving homemade sandwiches, guacamole and salsa.

Gina Wargas talked to the students about careers in cosmetology. She brought along mannequin heads for them to practice on, which brought out lots of creativity.

Christina Leppert gave students a look at working in the medical field as an ultrasound technician. Craig Brown talked about careers in law while Anna Krasevec talked about life as a scientist.

State troopers Briana Gigante and Jason Cole, with their K-9, Natty, were on hand to talk about law enforcement and the training of K-9s, while Robert Slovitsky, a pilot, talked about the world of flight and how it never gets old.

Other professions represented were civil engineer, SWAT officer, teacher, sports management, the military, veterinarian, mechanical engineer, motorcycle mechanic, doctor, marketing, athletic training, EMT and construction.

It was a very informative and enjoyable morning for the eighth-grade students, giving them a great representation of the professions open to them. It was put together by the awesome Crispell Counseling Department. A big thank you to our community partners who took time from their day to share their expertise and experiences with our students.
