The John Lennon Real Love Project is a songwriting workshop in which participants compose their own songs and open their hearts and voices.
The project came to EJR for the very first time this year, as the fifth graders participated, writing their own lyrics to a Lennon classic, “Real Love.”
Each fifth-grade class learned about the legendary songwriter in music class before this event. They learned, among other things, that although Lennon was incredibly talented and famous, he often felt alone.
On the day of the event, each of the fifth-grade classes had a 45-minute session with the project facilitator. The students collaborated with each other to rewrite lyrics to one verse of the song. They wrote their lyrics by brainstorming about what real love could look like at EJR and how they could help themselves and others to never feel alone. Then they recorded their full song all together, using Lennon’s original chorus.
The project launched in 2014 at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx. It moved to Gilda’s Club NYC, now the Red Door Community, for children, teens and adults impacted by cancer.
