CES meets the Kids Heart Challenge!

February is heart health month and that gave our physical education teachers the opportunity to focus on keeping kids’ hearts strong and healthy. They also kicked off the American Heart Association fundraiser held each year – the Kids’ Heart Challenge. Kids sign up and get donations, which all go to the AHA. With March 4 the last day to post donations, 116 students have signed up and raised $12,405! The original goal for CES was $7,000. That is simply amazing!

At the start of the month, Cara from Kids’ Heart Challenge, came and spoke to all students at CES. They learned that their hearts have a big job so it’s important to keep it happy and healthy. How do they do that?

  1. Add color to your plate with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that have lots of vitamins and nutrients.
  2. Learn hands-only CPR to be sure you can help in an emergency. If someone’s heart stops, they still get oxygen to their brain with CPR. Of course, call 911 first.
  3. Be kind. It has a chain reaction and makes your heart feel good and others too!
  4. Drink lots of water! Hydration is key to good health.
  5. Get enough sleep at night. Your body needs rest in order to stay healthy.
  6. Breath fresh, clean air!
  7. Get exercise! Move more in many different ways. Walking, playing an outside game, roller blading – they all get your heart pumping! Kids told Cara their favorite ways to move – soccer, tag, baseball, basketball and football were the top ways.

Wonderful healthy habits learned by our students and money raised for a great cause – that’s how it’s done the CES way!
