Director Report: Special Programs Overview

Terrilyn Cohn, Director of Special Programs and Rosemary Mannino, Assistant Director provided a presentation entitled Special Education Overview. A PowerPoint was provided that evening, as well as hard copies. Some of the highlights of the presentation included a review of the following:

Overview

• Current Total of  students with disabilities is 891
• 749 are placed in district programs
• 142 are placed out of district due to their needs
• Total number of CPSE, CSE, and 504 meetings held in 2017-2018 was over 2500
• Total number of CSE initial eligibility determination meetings was 131
• Total number of CSE declassified students was 15

Confidentiality

• We must provide needed services while at the same time respect the privacy of our families
• High levels of confidentiality must be maintained among all staff, including the Board of Education
• IDEA, FERPA, HIPAA
• Confidentiality includes personally identifying information
• Only those staff with a direct need to know are able to review special education records
• Special Education Performance
• Due to changes in the 3-8 testing format, NYS is advising not to compare the 2017-2018 data to prior years.
• This year is a baseline data year

The presentation continued with comparison charts ELA 3-8 SWD and 3-8 Math SWD, specific to State, County and Pine Bush, as well as a graduation rate comparison chart for Special Education. The presentation continued with highlights of the following:

In conclusion, the presentation continued with what is new this year and consideration of future programs.

Ms. Cohn and Ms. Mannino were thanked for their informative presentation.

Presentation: Pine Bush HS – STARS Academy Update

Assistant Principal Christopher Mummery was in attendance to provide an update on the STARS Academy. A PowerPoint was provided that evening, as well as hard copies. The presentation began with a review of the STARS staff, followed by some highlights reviewed as follows:

Mission:

• Provide each student with an individualized learning plan that will be used to guide them through their academic career.
• Provide instructional support to help students earn credits required for a high school diploma.
• Provide needed social and emotional support on a regular basis to assist students with navigating their daily lives.
• Help students to plan for academic and career opportunities after graduation.

Graduation:

2018-19: Anticipate 31 students will receive their high school diploma.

2017-18:  27 out of 29 students earned their high school diploma.

Our Program:

• Block scheduled classes Monday through Thursday
• Core classes meet for 84 minutes.
• Accelerated schedule allows students to complete a full year course during one semester.
• Blended learning-online and classroom teacher directed
• Gradpoint offers the opportunity to accrue credits needed for graduation.
• Daily classes in Creative Artz, World of Tech, Conversational Spanish, and Physical Education.
• Project Based Learning Friday
• Our goal is to provide our students with authentic learning experiences using a structured Project Based Learning approach.
• Topics include:  Humanities, Environmental Science, STEM, and Community Outreach
• Guest Speakers Program – Career/Self Esteem
• Veterinarian Dr. Kate Greenberg (Pine Bush graduate)

• Safe Homes-Domestic Violence/Teen Dating

In conclusion, Mr. Mummery reviewed the following

Five local businesses hosting eleven students – Young’s Service Station, Cartech Service Center, Hearts and Flowers, Second Life Screen Repair, PBCSD Pre-K Program

• Polaris University

 17 students enrolled and earning micro-credentials with Polaris Industries

Director Report: Athletics and Physical Education Overview

Michael Gillespie, Director, provided a current overview of Athletics and Physical Education. A PowerPoint was provided that evening, as well as hard copies. Mr. Gillespie began the presentation stating “this is a comprehensive look at the PB Athletic Program…what we are doing and where we are going.” He continued with a review of the following:

The Pine Bush Athletic Program is an interscholastic athletic program grades 7-12 that competes within the following leagues:

• OCIAA- Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (1 of 29 schools)
• Section 9 Athletics (1 of 45)
• NYSPHSAA- New York State Public High School Athletic Association (1 of 786)

RECENT ADDITIONS:

7 teams were added to the athletic program during the 2017-2018 school year

• 2 additional modified basketball teams- boys and girls teams representing each middle school
• 1 additional modified baseball team- baseball teams representing each middle school
• 1 additional modified softball team- softball teams representing each middle school
• 2 additional modified lacrosse teams- the first modified boys and girls lacrosse teams
• 1 Unified Basketball team- the first inclusive sports team for students with disabilities at Pine Bush

These teams provided opportunity for 119 additional athletes to participate in our athletic program!

UNIFIED BASKETBALL:

Impact of Unified Basketball on PB

• Provided an opportunity for 17 student athletes (with and without disabilities) to participate in one of the most amazing programs we have ever been able to offer and created relationships that would have never previously existed.
• Created a forum for several of our students to be recognized as a Pine Bush Athlete for the first time in their lives, memories that will last a lifetime.  
• Promoted a contagious appreciation for the students involved in the program AKA “The Unified team”.
• Brought out positive emotions and genuine excitement in our students, parents and staff.
• Made our school a better place for students to appreciate one another!

In just over two years, Pine Bush has won six OCIAA division titles, six Section 9 titles….

Mr. Gillespie continued with a review highlighting other contributions and participation by the athletic department, some of what includes the following:

• Recognition and support of Veterans;
• Participation in Cancer Awareness;
• Participation in NYSPHSAA Hazing and Prevention Program;
• Participation in Uncommon Athlete Program;
• Participation to raise awareness in dating violence – Orange County Safe Home “No More” Awareness Campaign.

*Other Recent Additions to Improve our Athletic Program:

• Family ID;
• HUDL.

Also included was a review of Communication Updates.

Mr. Gillespie further addressed many frequently asked questions, some of the topics included the following:

• Supplies;
• Coaching Certification;
• Cancellation of Practices/Games due to field conditions;
• Athletic team try outs;
• 7th and 8th grade tryouts for high school teams;
• Benefits of addition track and turf fields should the FMP – Bond Proposition Pass.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Mr. Gillespie was thanked for his presentation. Some comments and questions were offered.

Public Participation

President Greer opened the first public participation at approx. 8:32 PM requesting no personal references. The following comments/questions/concerns were raised:

• Resident/parent offered concerns regarding the athletic placement process, noting there are grey areas;
• Resident/parent offered concerns regarding Facilities Modernization Plan, as well as, suggestion that coaching should be rated.
• Resident/parent spoke regarding a specific coach actions and suggestion for anti-bullying for coaches. Took a while to receive response from Director.
• Resident/parent spoke specifically regarding Track and felt it is not as much on MS level as in the past;
• Resident expressed comment that blame typically is put on students, coaches need to be accountable as well. Also mentioned concerns regarding hiring process for coaches (teachers get preference).
• Resident/parent spoke regarding soccer incident, coaching needs to improve.
• Resident/parent spoke specific to soccer and ratio of wins.
