A salute to our vets

Pine Bush Elementary fifth-grade students learned a timely lesson about the history of Veterans Day. Students read about its history, how it started and why. Originally known as Armistice Day, Nov. 11 was a celebration of the end of World War I, which occurred on that day in 1918. In 1954, veterans’ groups requested that the day be set aside to honor veterans from all wars and so it is today.

A group of nine fifth-grade students stand together holding up the cards they made for veterans. Most cards are red, white and blue. All kids are wearing masks.

Students also did some research into their own family’s history. They shared stories of their own family members who have served in the armed forces.

Students in all PBE fifth-grade classes wrote notes of gratitude to local veterans, thanking them for their service to our country and for the sacrifices they made in their own lives to protect our freedom.

The students colored the covers of the cards in patriotic red, white and blue. The cards will go to local veterans’ associations and a nearby veterans hospital.

“We want to spread some kindness to our veterans,” said teacher Andrea Gennaro, “and thank them for their service.”
