Letter to College English Students

Dear College English Students:

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I am incredibly excited to be your College English 101 & 102 instructor. Together we will work to improve your reading and writing skills for your entry into college next year. Your senior year is quite special academically and socially, so I am thrilled to be a part of it. To put us immediately on task in September, please purchase the following texts. These books are mandated by Orange County Community College and will be our core texts for the first semester. In order to be as financially prudent as possible, it is important to read the notes below each text carefully.

1. Easy Writer (8TH edition) with Exercises, Andrea A. Lunsford – Bedford/St Martins

ISBN-13: 978-1319393342 or 978-1319393366

(NOTE: This book is available everywhere. You can buy it from 2023 & 2024 students, the OCCC bookstore, or online.)

2. Patterns for College Writing (16th edition), Kirszner & Mandell – Bedford/St Martins

ISBN-13: 978-1319411817

(NOTE: This is a NEW EDITION. You cannot buy it from former students. You can buy it from the OCCC bookstore or online.)

Below is the text for College 102. If you would like to purchase it in advance, you may, but it is not required until January:

1. The Norton Introduction to Literature (Portable 14th edition), Kelly J. Mays – W. W. Norton

ISBN-13: 978-132-404-4628

(NOTE: This book is available everywhere. You can buy it from 2023 & 2024 students, the OCCC bookstore, or online.)

Please have the first two texts in class by the first day of school. Please note that the textbooks are required until the END of each course (end of January and middle of June, respectively), so please make sure your rentals allow for these time frames. I want to strongly urge you to purchase books if possible, as annotating will be much easier if you can write in the texts. Otherwise, please purchase a large pack of Post-It notes for annotation. Additionally, please don’t get an electronic copy in lieu of the paper copy. Feel free to email me with any issues you face in acquiring these texts. I look forward to working with each of you this year. Enjoy your summer! Don’t forget that summer reading for 101 is due on the first day of class!

Sincerely,

Ms. Napolitano
