Celebrating Day of the Dead with Mexican hot chocolate and some math

Stacey Venzel’s fourth grade class and Tricia LoPresti’s fifth grade class at Pine Bush Elementary, along with the help of ENL teacher Tricia Becker, celebrated Day of the Dead – Dia de los Muertos – by making and drinking Mexican hot chocolate.

A group of fourth and fifth graders gather around a table looking at a piece of paper.

Paper skulls hang from a line on a wall. They are colored many different colors.

After learning the history of the holiday, the students analyzed a recipe that would make five cups of hot chocolate and multiplied the ingredients to figure out how much they would need for 50 cups! The students always have so much fun learning about different cultures.

Two boys, one sitting and one standing, hold their cups up.

A boy smiles as he holds his cup. He is dressed in a skeleton costume.

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday where families and friends gather to pay respects and to remember their family members and friends who have died. It includes food, drink and celebration.

A boy with short blonde hair smiles as he sips from a cup.
