CES fifth-graders study chemical reactions and produce some awesome goo

Fifth-graders in Robin Conklin and Heather Walmer’s class at CES are finishing  science experiments about chemical reactions.

Two fifth=grade girls work together on an experiment.

The lesson develops the idea that chemical reactions create new materials that have useful and interesting properties.

Three fifth-grade girls work together, with cups on their desk and directions for a lab.

The great goo experiment has the students watch how glue and borax intermix to create a mystery goo. When borax and glue are mixed together, a chemical reaction occurs that creates this new slimy, gooey substance. That’s due to the cross-linking of polymer chains in the glue with the borax molecules. The result is a fun, stretch material!

Two fifth-grade boys work together. Their desk is covered in cups and they are reading directions on a piece of paper.

Hands-on experiments are the best!
