Here’s the challenge: take 20 index cards and 18 inches of tape and create a tower as tall as you can that will be sturdy enough to hold a stuffed animal.
Seth VanGaasbeek’s third grade students at Circleville Elementary School took that challenge and created some pretty interesting towers that were able to hold that teddy bear.
The tallest in the class was 12 inches. Mr. VanGaasbeek showed the students that the triangle form is the strongest, demonstrating it by using a few index cards folded together into triangles and building on that. His tower was able to hold a book and a Chromebook!
The students worked together in small groups, strategizing, debating and building. It was both fun and very informative! It brought out a bit of good competition too.
