Churning butter like the pioneers!

Just before the Thanksgiving break, Tiffanie Reilly and Dina Kania’s first grade classes at EJR made butter!

A group of four elementary students sit on a multi-colored rug. The boy in the center is shaking a jar filled with cream.

A group of four students sit on a multi-colored rug. The boy on the left is holding a jar filled with creamy butter.

It was part of a lesson about how life was different in the past, including ways to get and make food. Friendsgiving seemed like the perfect time to make their own butter by shaking cream in a jar!

A little girl whose dark hair is pulled back into a ponytail smiles broadly as she holds up a piece of cornbread with homemade butter.

Then they got to enjoy the homemade butter with some corn bread. In the process, students also learned the science behind turning a liquid into a solid.

Hands-on learning, delicious and fun!
