Community celebrates its diversity and food at ENL potluck

The Pine Bush High School cafeteria was abuzz Wednesday night as the ENL International Potluck Dinner was taking place.

A family of four adults and four children sit around a table and smile. Some of the kids are holding balloon animals.

Hosted by our English as a New Language Department (ENL), students and their families celebrated their various cultures with colorful dress from their native countries and plentiful homemade food to share.

Two sisters smile standing next to their brother. The girls are wearing colorful dresses.

David Miele and Maureen Curtain, ENL team leaders for elementary and second respectively, welcomed everyone to the event. ENL staff introduced themselves to all in the crowded cafeteria.

A high school girl is drawing a caricature of a little girl who is sitting across the table from her.

There were games and activities for the kids – some to reinforce the learning in their English language journey and others just for fun – balloon animals, face painting, and even caricature drawings! All were a hit.

A woman with long reddish hair bends down to talk to a little boy who is smiling and waving. Another woman stands nearby smiling.

Some community partners were also on hand, including the Tri-County Prevention Coalition and Orange-Ulster BOCES spreading word of their English classes.

But it was the food that eventually took center stage. The families contributed a favorite homemade dish or dessert native to their country of origin for the potluck. The selection of food was tremendous, with dishes from more than a dozen countries. No one went home hungry!

A long table filled with different foods. Many people take food onto their plates from both sides of the table.

It truly was an amazing gathering, celebrating our community’s diversity and culture.
