Crispell Students Making A Difference club lends a hand to honor veterans

Crispell’s Students Making A Difference Club (SMAD) spent a morning recently assisting the local American Legion and Sons of the Legion put flags on veterans’ graves in the area.

Two young women walk through a cemetery. Both are holding American flags. One, with long dark hair, is putting on on a grave.

SMAD has done this for many years, according to Allison White, the club’s advisor. Ms. White and the group of students met the veterans at New Prospect Cemetery in Pine Bush where they searched for the American Legion markers on the graves of veterans. They placed an American flag on each of those graves.

Vietnam veteran Andy Brew, who is a member of the Pine Bush American Legion, said the group puts about 550 flags in 10 local cemeteries each year before Memorial Day. He was happy to have the help of the Crispell students, who individually thanked the veterans for their service while working with them.

A group of nine middle school students, six men all wearing caps, and a woman stand together on pavement, all holding American flags. There are trees in the background.

As she planted flags on many graves in the New Prospect Cemetery, seventh-grade student Laykin said, “I have a lot of respect for the veterans.”
