CVMS Interact Club creates warmth for many with Socktober

The CVMS Interact Club turned October into Socktober! This philanthropic group conducted a sock drive at school with the proceeds to be donated to the Middletown Warming Station. (Did you know that socks are the most requested clothing item by homeless shelters?)

A large group of middle-school age kids stand together with a large brown box in front of them. On the box is a large cut out of a sock. All kids have masks on.

A grand total of 278 pairs of socks were collected and donated! That really makes a difference to those trying to keep warm as the cold weather rolls in. Great job by these awesome kids and their equally-awesome club advisor, Nicole Bobby.

Three middle school girls hold up groups of socks they collected. All are wearing masks.

Ms. Bobby has been the club’s advisor for the past three years and said it’s a natural fit for her. She developed a sense of giving back when she was young and it has played a big part in her life. While in college, she was a part of Circle K, the collegiate and university community service and leadership development organization associated with the Kiwanis Club.

Now she is showing her students by example that giving has wonderful rewards to everyone involved.

Four middle school girls hold up socks while sitting at their desks.

Cole is a seventh-grade student and said he joined the Interact Club, in part, because he has helped with volunteer activities with both his dad and his brother and likes the result. “My parents wanted me to join a club and I thought this would be good. The motto is ‘service over self’ and that’s important.”

Destiny is in eighth grade. She is happily back this year after being a part of the group in sixth grade. Last year, there were no clubs.

“It’s fun and I like helping our community,” Destiny said.

Guiliana is a sixth-grade student. This is her first time as part of the Interact Club but said it’s something she really wanted to be a part of. “This helps people in our community. Some are going through rough times. It feels good for people to feel they are loved.”

These are the young women elected to lead the CVMS Interact Club. From left, Emily Dominick, treasurer; Kate Megello, secretary; Madison Sheets, president; Amelia Bavolar, vice president.

The group has plenty more projects on the horizon, working together with the Multicultural/Diversity Club to decorate for the holidays, making bookmarks for the school library and taking a visit to Pets Alive to help that organization. Great job by all!
