Third-grade students at EJR just completed a project that enhanced their research skills, sharpened their writing abilities, refined their tech capabilities and bolstered their confidence to give presentations, all while learning about someone they admire.
It was the biography project! Students used PebbleGo to explore biographies of people they might be interested in. After they chose the ones they would focus on, they created headings in their notebooks and learned to paraphrase to take notes for each heading. They collected facts about their subject and created Google slide presentations which included photographs, hyperlinks and slide transitions. They also attributed their facts to their sources.
Then it was time to present to their classmates. The presentations included a project each student created as an extra – a poster, bottle biography – where they create their biography subject using a bottle – and biography in a bag – where they decorate a bag and include items about the person’s life. Some students even dressed as their subject!
The subjects spanned generations! There was Walt Disney and Babe Ruth, Michelle Obama and Rosa Parks, Vincent Van Gogh and Ruby Bridges, Simone Biles and Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong and George Washington Carver, Ed Sheeran and Jennifer Lopez, Milton Hershey and Wayne Gretzky, even favorite authors Eric Carle, Dav Pilkey and Dr. Seuss!
The students gave incredible presentations and were eager to share their new-found knowledge of someone they admire.
