EJR students delve into their biography project

Third-grade students at EJR just completed a project that enhanced their research skills, sharpened their writing abilities, refined their tech capabilities and bolstered their confidence to give presentations, all while learning about someone they admire.

A third grade boy dressed in a NY Rangers jersey, holds a hockey stick. In the background on a screen is a picture of Wayne Gretzky with his name.

A third grade girl points to a screen. On the screen is a gymnast and the name Simone Biles.

It was the biography project! Students used PebbleGo to explore biographies of people they might be interested in. After they chose the ones they would focus on, they created headings in their notebooks and learned to paraphrase to take notes for each heading. They collected facts about their subject and created Google slide presentations which included photographs, hyperlinks and slide transitions. They also attributed their facts to their sources.

A third grade boy dressed as Albert Einstein, with fluffy white hair, a mask with a white mustache on it, a lab coat and a blue tie.

A third grade girl holding a poster with pictures of Nelson Mandela on it.

Then it was time to present to their classmates. The presentations included a project each student created as an extra – a poster, bottle biography – where they create their biography subject using a bottle – and biography in a bag – where they decorate a bag and include items about the person’s life. Some students even dressed as their subject!

A third grade boy with dark hair holds a poster with all pictures of Walt Disney on it.

A boy wearing a dark shirt with neon colors on it holds a large Hershey bar. Behind him is a slide projected on a screen with the name Milton Hershey and a picture of a large Hershey bar.

The subjects spanned generations! There was Walt Disney and Babe Ruth, Michelle Obama and Rosa Parks, Vincent Van Gogh and Ruby Bridges, Simone Biles and Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong and George Washington Carver, Ed Sheeran and Jennifer Lopez, Milton Hershey and Wayne Gretzky, even favorite authors Eric Carle, Dav Pilkey and Dr. Seuss!

A third grade girl holds a figure of a man in her hands. Behind her is a slide that has photos of a man and characters he created. The name Dav Pilkey is on top.

A third grade boy stands in front of a screen that has the name Chadwick Boseman with two pictures of men.
