The Pine Bush High School cafeteria was packed for the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser in March.
Sponsored by the Pine Bush High School Art Department, Empty Bowls raises money for local food pantries as it reminds others that many in the community struggle to feed their families.
Attendees enjoyed a simple meal of homemade soups and breads and got to take home a handmade bowl created by Pine Bush High School art students. Their creativity was on display as they crafted hundreds of beautiful bowls.
This was the 11th year Pine Bush High School participated in Empty Bowls, which is n ow an international project to fight hunger. It was the idea of a Michigan art teacher and her students back in 1990 who were looking for a creative way to raise money for a local food drive.
In the past five years, the Pine Bush Art Department has raised more than $10,000 for local food pantries from the Empty Bowls initiative.
This is a collaborative effort. The food is all made and donated by local restaurants, Pine Bush High School staff, Family and Consumer Science Program students and Art Department students. The meal is served by student volunteers.
