Energy efficiency was the topic at EJR assembly

Our planet is getting warmer and, if it continues, many animals and insects won’t reproduce, causing changes to our ecosystem. Andrew Clough from Orange and Rockland Utilities talked to students at EJ Russell Elementary School about energy and how they and their families can help slow the warming of the planet by making changes in their habits.

A man wearing a long sleeve gray shirt holds a microphone and talks to many elementary students sitting at tables.

Mr. Clough explained the importance of weatherizing your house. Insulating it, he said, is like a coat for your house. Most heat escapes through the roof, which is why it’s important to insulate.

He also discussed different types of ways to heat and cool a house, including renewable energy that does not cause greenhouse gasses, further warming the planet. Heat pumps, geothermal, solar, windmills and hydro-electricity are all great ways to improve the environment while keeping your home comfortable in all weather.

A man holds a microphone and talks. There is a large screen and slide behind him with a house on it and the words Renewable Solar.

There are many things people can do day-to-day to help save energy at home:

  • Turn off the lights to save electricity
  • Turn off water when brushing teeth and washing
  • Use LED light bulbs Unplug your devices and appliances when they’re not in use. He explained that they are always pulling energy if they’re plugged in.
  • Take shorter showers
  • Buy energy star appliances
  • Use natural light to help warm a house
  • Close the blinds and curtains when it’s cloudy
  • Use ceiling fans in both summer and winter
  • Turn the hot water tank down
  • Wash clothes in cold water
  • Consider getting a smart home device for your thermostat and lights and program them to turn on and off when needed.

This was a timely presentation since the students in fourth and fifth grades were studying the energy unit in science. The students had some great answers to Mr. Clough’s questions and also asked some insightful questions themselves.
