It’s March Madness – book edition – at PAK

It’s March Madness in Suzanne Parker’s second grade class at PAK! But it has nothing to do with college basketball. Ms. Parker, her co-teacher Lisa Donohue, teaching assistant Jodi Martin and the students have been reading Caldecott Medal winning books during the month of March (and into April). Caldecott Medals are awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Five second-grade students stand together each holding a book.

The class created a March Madness bracket of 16 books to read and vote on. A little social studies was mixed in since they’re learning about elections now. They learned you can’t have a tie so there has been a revote for one of the competitions. The book with the most votes advances in the bracket to the next round.

An elementary age boy with glasses and short dark hair, wearing a blue long-sleeve shirt works on his Chromebook.

A woman with shoulder length dark hair points to a bracket written on poster paper hanging on the wall as several young elementary students watch.

The students voted Friday, April 5, on the final four books. They’ve narrowed the field down to Beekle and Flotsam for the finals. The champion will be determined this week, right alongside with the men and women’s college basketball champions!

An entire second-grade class holds up books with three of their teachers.
