It’s March Madness – book style – at Crispell

Which book will be the champion?

Fresh off our mid-winter break,  students at the Crispell Middle School library will be reading graphic novels and manga novels then  vote all month  on which are their favorites.

To compile favorites, they will be using a bracket similar to the college basketball championships which are starting in March as well. Each successive bracket yields one winner which moves on to compete in the next bracket.

A gray background for the bulletin board. Across the top says March Madness. There are four sets of books on the left and four sets of books on the right, in a bracket pattern

Students  are already excited to start reading and voting for their favorites!

Graphic novels and MANGA books are stories that have detailed graphic drawings, sometimes incorrectly compared to a comic strip. These sophisticated drawings help with reading comprehension. MANGA books are Japanese graphic novels which have been translated to English. Most are typically written to be read from right to left. Students feel tremendous success when they complete these types of books as reading one can be completed  in a few hours.

A ballot that says Circle the winner in each pairing. There are titles of books in eight pairs.
This is the ballot for the first week of March Madness!

Graphic novels and MANGA books are wonderful  for students who either struggle or just don’t like to read. Graphic novels are typically referred to as “hook books” encouraging students to read more. Students learn the pleasures of reading and many of them move onto traditional fiction novels.

Let the competition begin!!
