Kindergarten students get great message, fun STEM activity from Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Tara Tuttle’s kindergarten class at PBE read the book, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” and followed it up with a STEM activity. The students worked with a partner and each pair made a tree to see how many letters would fit on the branches.

Two kindergarten girls sit at a table and build a tree with branches. There are plastic letters on the table.

They had to think about how to place the branches on the trunk to fit the letters. Keeping with the story, the class talked about perseverance, and not giving up.  If our tree falls over, we don’t get upset, we just try again.

A girl on the left and a boy on the right sit at a table as they built a little tree.

At the conclusion of the project, Ms. Tuttle and the class talked about how it all went. “You had to balance the letters on the branches like a teeter totter,” one student said.  When asked if anyone got frustrated, another student said, “I just laughed when our tree fell down.” Attitude is a big part of it! It’s not how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get back up!

Great job! Great message!

A kindergarten boy closes his eyes as he squishes his face smiling. His little tree, made of a paper roll and popsicle sticks is on the table. There are blue letters on the branches.
