Ellie Cassidy’s and Corrine Vertescher’s classes at EJR celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about the famous Spanish-American chef and humanitarian, José Andrés.
José Andrés started the World Central Kitchen, an organization that donates food to places in need after natural disasters. He is quite amazing! He is an award-winning chef and owns restaurants across the United States. The classes decided to do their own service project in honor of José Andrés – they brought in supplies to make birthday cake kits to donate to the food pantry.
Taking a page from José Andrés’ book, the classes decided to do their own service project in his honor. The teachers accepted donations from parents and created birthday cake kits to donate to local families in need. The kits included boxes of cake mix, cans of Sprite, frosting, candles, and foil pans with lids. Fun fact: Sprite can be used instead of eggs and oil in baking a cake.
Many of the students wore red and gold, the colors of Spain, to honor José Andrés.
The students were thrilled to be helping others and making a difference just like José Andrés.
