Learning about clouds with hands-on investigations

Students in Jessica Abrams and Ariana Lofrese’s classes at PBE recently did a very cool science investigation! They completed the Cloud in a Bottle investigation, guided by STEM coach Janine Brutvan.

Two elementary age boys work together on a science experiment One holds a clear tube and the other pours a liquid in it.

The students were learning about the steps of the water cycle and different types of clouds. They used different temperatures of water t investigate how temperature and air pressure work together to create clouds in our atmosphere.

Two elementary age boys sit at a table and work on a science experiment with a clear plastic bottle.

Students had to compress plastic bottles to build the pressure, read a thermometer to find changing air temperatures and were able to observe the steps of condensation and evaporation within their plastic bottles.

A group of elementary student work with an adult on an experiment.

Now, whenever they look up on the sky and see those wispy, feathery clouds way up high, they’ll know them as cirrus clouds. And those puffy, cottony looking ones – cumulus. Beware of the nimbus clouds that bring heavy rain and thunderstorms though!

Great job everyone!
