Life Skills class take in the culture at Storm King Art Center

Alexis Darro’s Life Skills class at Crispell took a field trip to Storm King Art Center recently, giving them the opportunity to learn through a cultural experience.

Six middle school students stand and smile with a mountain in the background. There is an adult on the right smiling too.

This trip helped the students identify and enhance their feelings through art and bring in the social-emotional learning piece of education. They learned about shapes and forms in a more authentic way than geometry in math. They developed a richer vocabulary through the art, using more adjectives to describe things.

Five middle school students sit or stand on rocks. Some are hollowed out and kids are sitting in them. There is a blue sky in the background.

A large black sculpture is in the background and five middle school students stand in front of it with their arms outstretched.

This trip showed them how art interacts with the environment and they interact with the art.

Two middle school students look at an interesting piece of metal sculpture with an adult.

Four middle school children and an adult look at a large silver-colored sculpture. There are trees in the background on a sunny day.
