Local author answers students’ questions about writing books, living with diabetes

Katie Sternemann’s first graders read a book called “Robot Parts” as part of Diversity Week at PBE. It was written by a local author, Laura Aiello, who has type 1 diabetes.

The book is about a boy with type 1 diabetes going about his normal life – going to school, going on vacation, etc. – while managing his diabetes. He talks about his “robot parts,” which he calls the medical devices that check his blood sugar and give him insulin.

Laura agreed to answer any questions the class had about the book, so together Ms. Sternemann and the class made a list of questions for her. Ms. Aiello sent a video answering all of the students’ questions. The kids were able to ask her how to write a book, how to find an illustrator, how to publish a book, as well as questions about diabetes and the “robot parts.”
