Mystery Science lesson teaches students about insulating properties

Students in Kimberly White’s second-grade class at Pakanasink had some fun while testing materials for their insulation properties.

Three second-grade students stand around a desk. One student with shoulder-length dark hair has a styrofoam cup on each hand. Another student in a purple shirt with hairpulled back and wearing a black mask holds a bottle of water.

Using the Mystery Science program, the students had a cold water bottle and a hot one. They touched the bottles with aluminum foil, Styrofoam and socks on their hands to see how the hot and cold bottles felt with each material.

Two second-grade students do a science experiment. The girl on the right has her dark hair pulled back in a ponytail and is wearing an orange and blue shirt and a blue mask. She has white socks on her hands as she picks up a bottle of water. Her classmate, a boy wearing a gray hoodie with short dark hair and wearing a mask, writes on a piece of paper.

The students worked together and took copious notes as the experiment progressed.

A second-grade girl, with long dark hair wearing a pink mask holds her hands up in front of her. They have aluminum foil on them.

In the end, they determined that Styrofoam was the best material for insulation, which is why they see many coolers made of this material!
