The Pine Bush High School Class of 2021 is graduating 19 student-athletes who have committed to playing their respective sport in college.
On Wednesday, June 16, Michael Gillespie, director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics, gathered these student-athletes, along with their coaches and family members, at the high school athletic field to salute them.
A very small percentage of high school athletes go on to play in college. Mr. Gillespie noted that just 1.9 percent of girls who play soccer in high school go on to play college ball for division 2 schools. For boys, that number is even less – just 1.5 percent play for a D2 school. Just 1.1 percent of high school volleyball players move on to play at a D2 school while 2.5 percent of lacrosse players do. The point is, not many continue their athletic careers in college.
Students who participate in extra-curricular activities benefit greatly from those activities. They develop leadership skills, gain positive role models, forge strong friendships and, in the case of athletes, improve their health and fitness.
So, here’s a shout out to those who are taking their athletic talents to the next level. Congratulations to all and best of luck in your future athletic and academic endeavors.
