Number Corner introduces fourth-grade students to pentominoes

This month’s Number Corner has fourth-grade students at Circleville Elementary School talking about pentominoes. What is a pentomino? It is a shape made with five squares joined together side by side.

A small group of fourth-grade students work at a table with white blocks.

Students learned that they have parallel and perpendicular sides, and an area of five square units; some may have lines of symmetry.

Four fourth-grade students work together with white blocks at a big table.

Here, students are exploring with tiles to see how many different arrangements they can create with no repeats, reflections, or rotations. How many do you think there are? Hint: double digits!
