Third graders at EJR had an amazing experience learning about the water cycle and weather. In addition to their regular lessons, they had five weekly lessons from conservation educators Ashley Hickey and Sarah Archbald to support their classroom learning.
During week one, Ms. Hickey and Ms. Archbald had them look at the important ecological processes that occur on earth, namely the water cycle and our weather.
The second week, they followed water droplets as they went through the water cycle and traveled around the world.
Week three, the students built up their weather and water vocabulary.
The fourth lesson was even more fun than the previous. The students went on a scavenger hunt. Using their senses and making connections, they found many different items related to weather. For example, they searched for a living thing in nature, something they could see, something made by weather and something that could cause pollution. It was a great exercise in putting together all they’d learned to this point.
On the final day of their special lessons, students broke into teams in each classroom to play water and weather Jeopardy! They came up with team names that were weather-related – think Team Thunder and Stormy Sunshine. They enjoyed the competition, and showing just how much they’ve learned over these five weeks about the importance of our water cycle and weather.
