Pakanasink fifth-grade student Giuliana “Gigi” VanSickle has been named the elementary school Gold Star Student from the Anti-Defamation League Albany.

Pakanasink fifth-grade student Gigi VanSickle was chosen the Anti-Defamation League Albany branch’s elementary school Gold Star Student for 2021.

Gigi was nominated for the honor by her  assistant principal, Colleen Delles, who has worked with Gigi on student council and the No Place For Hate committee.

“Gigi simply has a natural ability to expand upon topics that are sometimes difficult for fifth graders to talk about,” said Ms. Delles in her nomination letter.

For example, during a “getting to know each other” activity, Gigi, who learned virtually this year, talked about interests she and her classmates had in common and also revealed that she has autism. She shared with her classmates some of the challenges she encounters as someone on the spectrum. Her openness inspired her classmates to share more personal information about themselves and be at ease with each other.

Gigi was instrumental throughout the year in encouraging her classmates to press through tech glitches and to take pride in their efforts.

Life is not always rosy for Gigi, and she didn’t paint it to be that way, said Ms. Delles.

“She talked about life experiences that brought her joy, and also shared personal experiences of sadness and disappointment. Gigi’s integrity and humility are truly remarkable for her age,” she said. “She is an ally to her classmates as well as her teachers.”

For her part, Gigi was excited to get this honor.

“It feels really special because out of all the elementary students nominated, they chose me,” said Gigi.

She said she was proud to help her school work on the No Place For Hate United Kingdom project, where students from five schools in the United States and five schools in the United Kingdom shared about themselves. She has a message to her peers:

“You should always try your best to help people in school and out because it feels good.”

“Gigi shines with integrity and empathy, and has a strong passion to make sure everyone feels included,” Ms. Delles said. “She epitomizes the role of a NPFH Gold Star student.”

Congratulations Gigi. Your light shines brightly!
