While most celebrated Wacky Wear, Wacky Hair Wednesday during Spirit Week, Pine Bush Elementary School had a special spirit day dedicated to awareness for Kabuki Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder is special to the staff and students at PBE because Ashlyn Cardone, a student at PBE, lives with Kabuki.
Children and adults with Kabuki may have a variety of symptoms including mild to moderate intellectual impairment, growth delays, low muscle tone, feeding difficulties, heart defects, cleft palate, skeletal abnormalities, vision and hearing impairments, communication delays and behaviors similar to people with autism.
Wednesday was Kabuki Syndrome Awareness Day. Students and staff at PBE learned about the syndrome and wore green to mark the day. Ashlyn’s classmates learned why she is different from them, giving them some understanding of her challenges and her uniqueness.
It was a beautiful show of kindness, understanding and support for Ashlyn.
