PBHS’s YESS class takes the lead in preventing domestic violence

Students in Kara Sprague’s Youth Empowerment and Sustainability Skills (YESS) class have spent the past eight weeks completing a Mentoring In Domestic Violence workshop with Fearless (formerly Safe Homes).

A group of 24 high school students squat and stand by a purple sign. They are all wearing some sort of purple and holding peace signs up. The sign says Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Real Love Doesn't Hurt and Stop Domestic Violence.

Once a week, Fearless representatives came into the YESS classroom to discuss topics on domestic violence and prevention. This week was the last week working with the group and students will receive completion certificates, allowing them to be leaders and facilitators on the topic. YESS students will facilitate workshops throughout the year, including on Wellness Day in the spring.

The students also made purple ribbons, signifying domestic violence awareness, and handed them out to their classmates. They designed fliers, social media posts and crafted bulletin boards in the school to create awareness about domestic violence. Along the main office hallway, they hung a clothesline with empowering messages written on paper shirts.

A pumpkin is painted purple with the words Stop Domestic Violence written in white.
