The goal for Stacie Blaut’s sixth graders at CVMS was to construct a free-standing tower using the least number of index cards in order to hold a stuffed animal for 20 seconds. This lab wasn’t just fun and educational – they used it to explore the scientific method.
The scientific method is the process of observing, asking questions, and seeking answers through tests and experiments. In applying the scientific method, a researcher develops a hypothesis, tests it through various means, and then modifies the hypothesis on the basis of the outcome of the tests and experiments.
Even though the groups used a variety of methods for construction – curved bases, wide bases, rectangular structures – multiple were successful! Students worked collaboratively through this process to learn that scientists are always editing, revising, and making adjustments to their ideas when experimenting!
