Students get a visit and much knowledge from our PB volunteer firefighters

Our wonderful volunteer fire fighters from throughout the area presented to our elementary students during Fire Safety Week and emphasized the importance of knowing what to do in case of a fire emergency at their home.

A man stands in front of a group of elementary students pointing to a photo of a fire. Many of the kids have their hands up.

Members of the Pine Bush Fire Department presented to the students at Pine Bush Elementary School about what they need to know in advance of an emergency situation at home.

First thing to know: EDITH – Exit Drills In The Home. Firefighter Gillespie told the students they have to always have two ways out of their house – multiple doors or windows, front and back.

A group of elementary students line up listening to a man talk. Behind him is a red and white fire truck.

They learned that smoke detectors are placed on the ceiling because smoke rises. When they hear the smoke detectors, they should get out and stay out. Do not return for anything or anyone else. Instead, let the firefighters know if someone is still in the house.

Have a meeting spot for such emergencies so the entire family can gather and know everyone is out safe and give information to first responders when they arrive.

Change those smoke detector batteries every six months. A good rule of thumb is to change them when the time changes. It’s easy to remember!

Two elementary boys sit on seats inside of a fire truck, smiling.

It’s very important to remember to sleep with your door closed at night. The firefighters reminded the students that a door can protect you from fire and smoke for a good 20 minutes if a fire is happening. Check the door with the back of the hand to see if it is hot. If not, open the door a bit to see if you can escape, staying low to the floor for the fresher air

If it’s not safe, close the door and put something at the bottom to block smoke. Then try the window. If you’re on the second floor and can’t get out, hang out the window, scream and wave a piece of clothing or towel until the first responders get there and rescue you.

Small elementary students line up to get into a fire truck.

Our students were very knowledgeable, answering the questions correctly!

After the presentation, students got to  check out the fire truck and the equipment used to help save people from fires and car accidents.

Thank you to our incredible community volunteers who take the time to spread their wisdom to our young students to ensure they are safe in difficult situations.
