Students honor our veterans with letters of thanks and high praise

Megan Collins and Christa Konwisarz’s first-graders at EJR have been learning about veterans. They discussed the different branches of the armed service – army, navy, air force, marines, coast guard and space force – and what makes someone a veteran.

They talked about what they would want to say to veterans in a letter and then wrote them! They used words like brave, helpful, strong and phrases including “grateful for you” and “keep us safe.” The students then wrote their letters in their own words, most to a veteran they don’t know but a couple to their dads who have served.

They put finishing touches on their letters, including some festive coloring and hearts, to thank the veterans for their sacrifice and  for keeping our country safe.

Another project they started was creating poppies, a symbol of sacrifice since World War I. According to the American Legion Auxiliary, the red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice honoring those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Ms. Collins sent some of the letters to Pine Bush high School Principal Aaron Hopmayer, himself a veteran. He distributed them to staff members who also served. He was so grateful for the letters that he made a trip to EJR to thank the students in person and answered questions regarding serving in the armed forces. He brought along a friend, Sargent Woods, to speak to the students as well.
