Leeann Noonan’s students took part in the marshmallow challenge today, a team-building exercise meant to get the students to work together, develop a plan and bring it to fruition.
The teams were each given 20 sticks of spaghetti, a yard of tape and a yard of string, one large marshmallow and scissors. The challenge was to build the tallest freestanding structure using only the materials given, with the full marshmallow on top. It couldn’t be taped to a base or table.
It truly is a challenge. There were several leaning towers that could not support the weight of the marshmallow. There were many different designs throughout the day that were amazingly creative.
The highest tower of the day was 18.5 inches. Kudos to the group that designed and worked that plan! But the ultimate goal was having the students work together, devising a solution to their challenge. That was the end goal and a great way to start the new school year.
