Swimmers head to states after capturing Section IX title

What a season for the girls swimming and diving team. The girls took the girls swim team crowd the podiumSection IX championship for the first time since 1990.

“We had an outstanding season,” said Coach John Barth. “We finished the dual meet season 12 – 0 winning the league championship for the first time since 1998. We then won the OCIAA Division 1 Championship for the first time since 1990.”

The team broke four school records this year:

  • 200 Medley Relay – Samantha Hufcut, Mackenzie Gula, Deanna Caceres and Antonia Licardi
  • 200 Freestyle Relay – Elishka Hajek, Samantha Hufcut, Deanna Caceres and Antonia Licardi
  • 400 Freestyle Relay – Elishka Hajek, Samantha Hufcut, Deanna Caceres and Antonia Licardi
  • 100 Backstroke – Deanna Caceres.

Pine Bush had three section champions as well – the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay teams listed above, and Antonia Licardi in the 100 Freestyle.

The three relay teams qualified for the New York State championships in Ithaca coming up along with Antonia Licardi in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, Deanna Caceres in the 100 Backstroke and Samantha Hufcut in the 100 Backstroke.

“We are very proud of all this team has accomplished,” Barth said, speaking for himself and coaches Kathy Gallagher and Mike Reineke. “We are very happy.”

Barth is also to be congratulated, being named the Section IX Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year.

“I couldn’t have done it without all our great swimmers and divers,” he said.

Congratulations to Coach Barth, and the entire team on an incredible season. Best of luck in Ithaca at the states!
