There is always excitement at the beginning of March here in Pine Bush. Why? It’s Read Across America Day and Week!
March 2 is a day to celebrate – it is Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday (aka Dr. Seuss), who wrote more than 60 children’s books, including many classics.
The tradition at Pine Bush Elementary School and Pine Bush High School is truly an incredible one. Students in Leeann Noonan’s Family and Consumer Science and Human Development classes volunteer to make snacks, create games and read to the PBE kindergarten students, complete with the Dr. Seuss theme. It’s a much-anticipated day for all!
This year was truly special. There were goldfish snacks and cookies for the kids, along with Cat in the Hat tic tac toe and coloring projects. Each kindergarten class got to sit in the PBHS library pit as one of the outstanding high school volunteers read a Seuss classic to them.
The day had two amazing Cats in the Hat – Mackenzie Gula and Mya Riquelme. They played with the students, colored with them and played Simon Says that involved much laughter and movement! It was a wonderful interactive experience for all.
There were also some special guests dropping by, including Superintendent Brian Dunn, Assistant Superintendent Amy Brockner and Assistant Superintendent Joseph Lenz. Mr. Dunn talked to the kindergarten students, giving fist bumps and letting them know that one of his very favorite things to do is read!
Read Across America Day is a yearly observance started by the NEA (National Education Association) in 1998 originally to commemorate the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss and promote reading.
Now, let’s read, read, read!
