Third graders are taking on the challenge to build a bridge

Third-grade students in Corrine Vertescher’s class at EJR are building bridges! In science class they are studying invisible forces and the topic covered building strong bridges.

Two third-grade students sit on the floor. They have two stacks of three notebooks on the floor with a piece of paper across te top and one folded underneath the other. There are blocks and a ruler on top of the paper.

The students were tasked with making a strong bridge using just two pieces of paper and a stack of books six inches apart. The students went to work to figure it out. They studied and discussed the possibilities. They used trial and error, adding all sorts of materials they found in the classroom. Some of the bridges held more than 100 unifix cubes plus several other materials, like water bottles and pencil cases!

Three third grade students stand at a desk that is holding two pencil caseswith a piece of paper on it. On top of the paper are lots of things, including a cup and water bottle.

Two girls smile as they lean on a desk. There is a piece of paper across books and on the paper are blocks.

Ms. Vertescher was very impressed with their projects and is sure there are future engineers right there in her classroom.
