Traditional art is the focus at Fine Art Summer Enrichment Academy

Janice Barth went old school with the Fine Art Summer Academy this year. Her students focused on traditional art this year, including working in the darkroom!

Four high school students - three girls and one boy - stand in front of a wall that contains artwork they produced.

The students worked with clay on the potter’s wheel as well as sculpting with their hands. In the dark room they learned how to work with negatives and enlarging. They used the printing press for print making.

“The dark room helps with patience and problem solving,” said Ms. Barth. “It was totally new and different for them.”

One of the many benefits of the summer academy is having the luxury of time. “We did things that time doesn’t allow in the regular day,” said Ms. Barth.

The students worked on deconstructing a photo of an icon, where they de-assembled the photo and put it back together in whatever way they wanted. Then, each student told a story about the icon they chose.

Nicholas Hall attends BOCES for filmmaking so it was no surprise that he chose Robert DiNiro as his icon. The other subjects included Winona Ryder, Bo Burnham and Big Bunny.

Assistant Principal Jen Evans thanked the parents for supporting their children in their artistic endeavors. “There is so much talent in their art,” she said.

Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Amy Brockner said she applauds the students who worked through part of their summer as well as Ms. Barth for taking the traditional route with some of the projects.

“You chose to come to school when you didn’t need to and spent 90 hours expanding your knowledge and creativity,” said Ms. Brockner. “Your work also provides great stress relief for you. We’ve learned how important it is to take care of our mental health. What a great way to take care of yourself. I applaud you all.”
