Twenty earn Seal of Biliteracy at recognition celebration

Pine Bush High School held its first ever recognition celebration for students who have earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy.

A group of 18 high school students and several teachers stand in three rows. The students all have gold ribbons around their necks with medallions on them.

The intent of the New York State Seal of Biliteracy is to encourage the study of languages, prepare students with 21st century skills, recognize the value of foreign and native language instruction in schools and affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society.

A high school senior with blonde hair, wearing a blue jacket and tan pants, accepts a ribbon from a teacher. There are two students in the background.

Earning the seal takes intense study and presentation skills. The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who have attained a high level of proficiency in the three standards/modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational, in one or more languages, in addition to English. The criteria to be awarded the Seal of Biliteracy is based on those established by the Board of Regents.

A young woman in a red and white dress, wearing a gold ribbon around her neck with a medalion on it, speaks into a microphone. Behind her is a woman in a blue and white dress.

Eleanor Dana, the district’s world language department chairperson and Seal of Biliteracy coordinator, thanked the recipients for their hard work in earning the seal, as well as the Spanish teachers throughout the district for making the program possible, especially the Spanish 4 and 5 teachers: Monica Morales, Mari Schaffer and Daniel Edwards.

Two women stand in front of banners with shields on them. The woman on the left has long reddish hair and is wearing a navy blue jacket and white dress. The woman on the right has a blue and white dress on and has shoulder-length light hair.
Kelly Cooke, left, and Eleanor Dana have been instrumental in the creation of the Seal of Biliteracy program here at Pine Bush.
